At this moment, the song "We Are Never Getting Back Together" by Taylor Swift is wiping out all other competitors for hits on iTunes! The only other song that comes close is the hit song Gangnam Style, which is just as saddening to see. Taylor Swift is a "country artist" who is famous for writing her own songs, often times based on her own experience. Now personally, I love country but this song remindes me nothing of country. It's a poppy disaster that will get stuck in your head after the first time you hear it. I mean come on!
The first time I heard this song I turned it off in the first 30 seconds. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a Taylor hater, however this song could have been written by any 13 year old who just went through a "breakup". The first time a listener hears this song, they are automatically going to reference their breakup, and then make it "there song" or it will become "the song that fits their life". I'm all about support after a breakup, and trying to feel good, but this song is just adding to the annoyance of post relationships.
Now from a musical standpoint, this song again really bothers mr. One, she sounds completely auto tuned. The poppy feel she went for with this song is completely different from her classic country feel. Lyrics wise, it's the same lyrics over and over! I mean come one people, we hear " we are never ever, ever, getting back together" almost 10 times throughout the song! It gives me a major headache. If this is the music that pleases the American public, I am disappointed it.

THANK YOU. I cannot stand this song, so it's comforting to see that someone else is on my level. Granted, I actually do have quite a few problems with Taylor Swift, I'll try to analyze this particular song as objectively as I can.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, I completely agree with what you said about a teenager being able to write this song. Taylor Swift is how old? She's 22 and she sounds like she's 14. Please, be more obnoxious and whiny, you didn't make your point clear enough the first time.
Second of all, I don't understand how she even considers herself a country artist anymore. The past few singles she's released (especially this one) are unanimously pop songs. She may have started out as country, but that's definitely not the kind of artist that she is now.
And finally, this song is complete garbage. The lyrics just whiny and obnoxious, period. The chorus itself just sounds piercing and I personally hate the whole "we-heeeeeeeeeee" part, it drives me totally insane.
However, I can't lie because it is really catchy. I should know as it's been stuck in my head for the past few days. However, when I heard it covered by the a cappella group Pentatonix and I actually liked it a lot more. It's probably my T-Swift bias in the way. Regardless, I'm glad to see that I'm not the only person who doesn't understand what's happening with mainstream music!

ReplyDeleteWhile I am a Taylor fan I do have to agree this is not one of her best. Honestly I think a lot of her singles do not show off her songwriting abilities. As for this song being repetitive, whiny and catchy Taylor kind of did that intentionally. She wrote the song about an ex who made her feel like the music she was making wasn't as good as the music he preferred. Therefore, when asked about the song in an interview with USA Today Taylor said:
ReplyDelete"So I made a song that I knew would absolutely drive him crazy when he heard it on the radio. Not only would it hopefully be played a lot, so that he'd have to hear it, but it's the opposite of the kind of music that he was trying to make me feel inferior to."
So, even though this song is way over played and can easily get on anyone's nerves I think Taylor accomplished what she initially hoped to accomplish with this single.
I had no idea that was her motive behind the song, thank you for sharing that! Thats kinda funny now that i know that! I mean, i still personally hate the song, but knowing that kinda makes it a little better. IF there was her true purpose, I completely agree with you because it really annoys me!
